Around The Block

Back in the office after spending several days at the Washington State Main Street/Preservation Conference in Vancouver WA. It was a great conference, and I presented one session called “Anatomy of a Special Event.” The Port Townsend Main Street Program was honored with an “Excellence on Main” Award for the 2012 Downtown Construction Communications Plan. SCJ Alliance Senior Project Manager Scott Sawyer and City of Port Townsend Marketing Director Christina Pivarnik attended the reception and accepted the award with Port Townsend Main Street Program.

Flower Baskets were up in time for the Rhody Parade. We had alot of fun with our Rhody Parade entry for The Taste of Port Townsend--a classy 1954 lime green pickup truck driven by Steve Taylor (thank you Steve!). Thanks to our pit crew, Elizabeth and Jack Becker, and our “diners” in the back, Margaret and Gordon.

Time Marches On...only 20 days til Spring! A year ago exactly we were immersed in construction (and mud!) downtown on Taylor Street and beyond. Thankfully, we all survived and we have a beautiful new street, safe sidewalk lids and reinforced tunnels, relites in the sidewalk and new planking towards Union Wharf. It was six months of hard work for the crews, our businesses, City Staff and the Main Street Program, but it is now a memory...and an amazing improvement to our downtown streetscape.

Thanks to the 38 businesses which signed up for the coupon book. The first group arrives April 6 (Achtung Motor Cruise), followed closely by the cruise ship visitors April 10. We will greet them with the “Welcome to Port Townsend” coupon book, and there are some great activities planned for them, coordinated by Christina Pivarnik, City Marketing Director, and the Jefferson Museum of Art and History.

It’s been a beautiful, sunny, busy day in the office. We were glad for the weather which made Port Townsend look its best for the commercial filmed here today on Taylor Street.
They were a friendly, great crew. Visitors to the office included the commercial’s location scout, Ken Coble (who brought thank you chocolates!), Sheila Ramsey, who tapes the volunteer segments on KPTZ, two volunteers who want to help with the Family Portrait, and a property owner. PT Main Street is also the drop off point for posters that go in the Taylor Street bulletin board, and it’s always fun to say hi to community members who are working on fun projects and have posters to tell about their events.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, we held our annual board planning retreat and invited committee volunteers to join us for lunch. It was great to catch up on all the news and get inspired for the new year.
Enjoy your weekend!

Here’s to 2013, a year filled with success and happiness.

It’s Gallery Walk this Saturday, Sept. 1st.
Don’t forget to print out the Sidewalk Sale sign in color and put in your store window to reach these customers. The Sidewalk “Sail” takes place Sept. 8 & 9 this year, during Wooden Boat Festival. Merchants wanted to experiment with this new timeframe to see if Wooden Boat foot traffic could be circulated more down the street.

We also are in the process of distributing the flyers for the PT Film Festival Window Contest (deadline Sept. 18th to participate) and PT Main Street Girls’ Night Out (sign up by Sept. 10!)

ALSO--it’s hard to believe it, but there are only two more Concerts on the Dock concerts! This Thursday, August 30th features folk music with Shady Grove. The final concert is next WEDNESDAY, Sept. 5th at 5:30 pm (seating opens at 5pm in the Beer/Wine/Cider Garden). The final concert stars THE PITFALLS and LOW ONES. Don’t miss this final bit of summer fun.

Uptown Street Fair was major fun! The parade was as eclectic as usual, with some wild fashion trends. The Main Street “Sidewalk Sail” boat entry won the “Uptown Spirit Maxi Award” which was an honor! Thanks to our promotion committee and Mark Cole, Annie Clark, Sloan and Sammie Pierson for participating. And thanks to Jack and Elizabeth Becker for lending the boat. The live music was terrific this year...Kudos to Uptown Street Fair coordinator Lisa Doray. The original trophies were created by Jeanne Moore of Potpourri Interiors.

A great crowd for jazz last night at Concerts on the Dock--thanks for coming. What a beautiful day to grab lunch or have dinner al fresco! Loving the summer sunshine, the boats on the water, the flower baskets and gardens in bloom. Port Townsend is so easy to love, but particularly in summertime, don’t you think?
Fun this weekend includes the Uptown Street Fair & Parade on Saturday (including art activities for children, the Farmer’s Market, Port Townsend Arts and Crafts Fair) and local felt artist Janice Speck has a pop up shop at 926 Water Street in the Kellogg Building this weekend.

8-16-12
TONIGHT features JAZZ at Main Street’s Concerts on the Dock. Come bask in the sunshine, sip refreshing beverages and chill out at the Pope Marine Park Plaza. Bring a picnic and your own chair or blanket and watch the boats go by at these free, all ages shows. A number of restaurants are open during the concerts so you can also get dinner to go and you won’t miss a note.

8-13-12
We thank everyone for coming to the Main Street Merchant Breakfast last week. It was attended by 50 guests. We started the day with a toast to everyone to celebrate summer and we raised a glass in memory of Frank D’amore, Uptown Business owner and active community member. Frank will be dearly missed.

Also at the breakfast, business owners made announcements and Rosie Itti, Main Street board member, gave an intro to the new Facebook Format. Quimper Mercantile folks gave an update and tour of the new facility. Main Street announced that the Sidewalk Sale will take place during Wooden Boat Festival Sept 8 & 9.

Now we are getting ready for The Uptown Street Fair which takes place this coming Saturday. Lots of great music and fun for kids, plus the shortest but most fun parade around at 1pm!

SPEAKING OF GREAT MUSIC, if you like Jazz, come on down to Concerts on the Dock this Thursday with Chuck Easton!

right next door (where the empty lot is know) that a very busy evening clientele if you know what I mean. It was great fun to visit with her and her husband. Margie lives in the Seattle area now, but tries to get back to Port Townsend every year.

A bit of a rainy solstice, but the flowers should be spectacular this year. The city is putting in wine barrels with flowers in the 900 block of Water until the new street trees arrive. Look for those soon.

I enjoyed Promotion Committee President Sue Arthur’s presentation on her trip to Africa on 6/20. She was the speaker at Kiwanis on Wednesday at Manresa Castle and it was a fascinating show documenting her recent trip to see her daughter (and elephants, giraffes and zebras).

Local artist Margie McDonald puts the finishing touches on the artistic archway that is being installed on the sidewalk at Water & Taylor Street on Tuesday, February 21--Mardi Gras-- to welcome pedestrians. We are having an “Archway Opening” at 4 pm Tuesday.
Businesses are open during construction and are accessible via the sidewalk. It is anticipated that Taylor Street will be closed to traffic through early May. The archway idea was generated by merchants as we planned for the construction process. It was created under the auspices of the Port Townsend Main Street Program, the City of Port Townsend, and PT Artscape. 59 Port Townsend High School students in Kathleen Burgett’s art class worked on the art project with Margie McDonald. It is part of the “Light at the End of The Tunnel” Project to support businesses during the downtown construction project. Time to stop snowing!

It’s been a quiet week, with a fluffy blanket of snow covering town. But now it’s melting, and things are picking up for the weekend. Come join friends and warm up at one of our friendly coffeehouses. Shake cabin fever and go out for dinner! On Friday evening, the Wineseller is hosting a wine tasting of Spanish gems. There are new movies at The Rose, the Iron Lady with Meryl Streep is playing at The Uptown Theater, and there’s live music at local clubs.

Around the block:
Update for January 19, 2012 noon DM disposal has just notified the city that they have had to pull their trucks off the road today for safety reasons. As soon as possible they will resume service. They will work Saturday. If you have a scheduled pick-up, leave your cans off the road but visible for the trucks.

Thanks to all who have pitched in to shovel snow from the sidewalks. Jim Cately, owner of William James Bookseller, was spotted shoveling his block of 800 Water Street. Thanks Jim! Tickled Pink, 825 Water Street, is remodeling. January is a great time for remodeling/painting projects, getting a head start on taxes, and catching up on paperwork. You can show off your talents at Open Mic at Sirens on Wednesday evenings, and there’s Karaoke on Thursdays eves. At The Upstage, the Open Mic showcase is on Monday nights. Come down for some local color!

It was a very special day on Saturday, Dec. 3 The carolers sang during the Merchant Open House from 1-3 pm and again at the Treelighting. Santa arrived in style with Mayor Sandoval aboard Fire Engine No. 3. There was a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” and a holiday message by the Mayor. Santa visited with children after the treelighting at Flagship Landing. Treats were provided by Bon Appetit and Kiwanis Key Club helped Main Street with an ornament-making activity for waiting children.

Thanks to all our volunteer helpers and to our Promotion Committee for their hard work.

Congratulations to two local winners of the Hometown Holiday Sweepstakes--Pam Gray and Elizabeth Mention. They were very excited to each win a $500 shopping spree!

If you are one of the 34 stores participating in the holiday activities, please promote it on your Facebook and social media. Let your customers also know about your extended hours. The next special event is LOCALS’ NIGHT December 15th. There’s so much fun in Port Townsend throughout the holiday season.

The holiday graphics feature the James & Hastings Building and Fire Truck No. 3 (Santa’s ride this year); it was created by Kevin Mason (

Congratulations to
TICKLED PINK at 825 Water Street for their winning holiday windows--the theme was “Let There Be Light.”

The Main Street ornament is on sale now at 12 select stores; it features Fire Engine No. 3 which brought Santa to town this year for the treelighting. We ask merchants and property owners to do their part in helping Port Townsend sparkle for summer. Extra attention is needed for windows, doorways and sidewalks in front of your businesses. For sidewalk cleaning, hosing off near the catch basin in the street is the best bet.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ATTENDS QUARTERLY MANAGER MEETING IN MOUNT VERNON
I have just returned from two days meeting with Main Street Managers from across the state. Our training was focused on “Marketing Main Street” with Erica Mills of Claxon Marketing. It was a fascinating and worthwhile session. There was advance homework and thought-provoking followup still to do.

100 FLOWER BASKETS, ADAMS STREET PARK BLOSSOMS
Thanks to Tara, our waterer, the hanging flower baskets planted by Henery’s Garden Center are blooming beautifully. Though it has been challenging, unseasonable windy and wet, she has devoted herself to their care, deadheading, fixing the hangers, and keeping plants in good health. Despite birds nesting, winds whipping, and excessive rain, she is winning the battle for beautiful baskets throughout town. Thanks Tara! And thanks to all the merchants who have signed up for this program to keep Port Townsend beautiful.

It is exciting to have two ferries back in service on the Port Townsend-Coupeville route and just in time for the busy three day weekend! Three cheers to WSDOT, our civic leaders and Todd Shipyards for making it all happen.
The MV Salish is sparkling in the dock. The ferry party on June 30th was attended by approximately 300 community members and included words of welcome by elected officials and Washington State Dept. of Transportation representatives. The greetings and performances by members of the Port Gamble S’Kallam, Jamestown S’Klallam and Lower Elwha S’Kallam tribes were a highlight of the event.
